Angels of Dawn – “Liming Family”

Toward the end of 2010, I’ve had the opportunity to visit and work as a volunteer for one week at a Chinese orphanage called “Liming Family “in Biancun village, Hebei province, China. What I saw and experienced in this one week’s time have had a tremendous impact and lasting affect on me. It also gave me a deeper understanding of the Bible verse that:” It is a more blessed thing to give, rather than to receive.” Acts 20:35.

It all started in 1988 when the then beloved Bishop Raymundo Wang re-established St. Therese of the Child Jesus congregation and also the “Liming Family” for many babies who have been discarded by their own family and left at the front gate of the local churches. Nearly all of the babies have some form of physical and/or mental defects one way or another. The sisters took them all in and named each with the Chinese character “Heaven – 天” as their surnames since they are all children of God and treasures of God. Although they maybe imperfect in our worldly eye, they are all Angels of God, and I call them Angels of Dawn!

Soon news spread and more babies were “dumped off” to the churches in the pre-dawn hours. In time, both the congregation and Liming Family grew.   The sisters called the place a “Family” rather than an “orphanage” with good reason because it is constantly filled with love, hope, laughter and happiness. Since inception, it has taken-in more than 400 children. Many have to be on wheelchairs and will be dependent on others for the rest of their lives. The more fortunate ones are able to move around with or without wheelchair. Some can even attend local or out of town school at a lower grade. Occasionally, due to inborn or incurable disease, they have to go through the sad phase of witnessing the passing of some of their friends in the family being received by our Lord Himself! To them, such is life and they simply have to accept life as is and as it comes. But this in turn, builds closer relations among the members in that they would all try to come back to the “family” for reunions during important holidays such as Chinese New Year, Mid-autumn festival, etc.

Here are some brief descriptions of a few of the Angels:

Angle Xuan Xuan – Tian Zi Xuan: 18 months. Unable to care for himself. One might be shocked to see him for the first time as he has a big hollow hole near the center of his face and a large bump on top of his head. No one expected him to live long after being picked up by sisters from the church gate. Yet with God’s mighty grace, he miraculously survived! However, he still faces serious abnormal growth in addition to some type of nerve damage and mental retardation. We are praying that God can perform a second miracle on him! At the same time, we are searching for reputable neuro/cosmetic surgeons who are willing to help.Jerry 1-949-302-1448   This email address is being protected from spambots. Angel Da Bao – Tian Da Bao: 23. Quadriplegic, without four limbs at birth and must spend her entire lifetime on wheelchair. Unable to care for herself but smart and a great debater. Uses her mouth to do everything, work with beads, to write, to play computer, to turn book pages, etc.   Her goal is to become a lawyer and to fight justice for the less fortunate people.

Angel Lan Lan – Tian Lan Lan: 25. Blind at birth. Minor mental retardation, no sense of directions. Able to care for herself. Likes to learn English, loves to play piano, although not Lang Lang yet but she plays rather well. Her dream is to travel overseas and play as a pianist. Lan Lan often spends a long time daily to pray for other peoples’ needs.

Angel Meng Meng – Tian Meng Meng: 19. Spastic cerebral palsy. Moves slow, difficult in learning, needs wheelchair. Able to care for herself and help feed smaller children. Has sweetest smiles.

Angel Ying Ying – Tian Ying Ying: 5. Paralysis of the lower half of the body. Needs wheelchair. Normal intelligence. Is preparing for elementary school entrance. She just LOVES to eat so much so that her chubby cheeks are almost exploding!

Angel Dou Dou – Tian Dou Dou: 7. Mental retardation and autism. A handsome young fellow with the purest gaze you will ever see. He is nick named the “Little Prince” of Liming Family. Unable to care for himself.

Angel Guo Guo – Tian Guo Guo: 17. Paralyzed from waist down. Needs wheelchair. Can care for himself. Currently going through rebellious adolescence stage and dislikes learning. 6th grade.   Smart and likes to dis-assemble things. He was interested in my camera. I lend it to him and within a few minutes, he showed me two pictures of his self portrait – enlarged facial images.

Angel Shuang Shuang – Tian Shuang Shuang: 17. Severe mental retardation. Able to walk and eat but unable to care for herself most of the time. She likes to pull off and eats her own hair and also looks for hairs and dead flies on the floor as well. She would put them into her mouth when no one is looking. As a result, sisters had to cut her hair really short so she can’t pull them anymore. She would often walk around the room with her head down, carrying someone’s slipper on one hand and busy searching the floor.

Angel Er Bao – Tian Er Bao: 17. Abnormal hands and arm development. She’s able to write but very slowly. Can care for herself most of the time. Loves to speak and learn English . 7th Grade.

Angel Yu Xiang – Tian Yu Xiang: 23. Cerebral Palsy affecting lower half of his body, needs wheelchair. Able to care for himself and do handicraft work. A factory actually offered him a job but he had to turn it down due to the dorm is on the 2nd floor and there was no handicapped facility in the factory.   This leaves him the only other option by riding a tricycle using his “hands” to transport passengers back and forth from the village to town to earn some money.

Angel Won Won – Tian Won Won: 5. Looks like a normal 5 yr old with normal intelligence, but has to wear diaper on a constant basis. When he can get up early, he would often go to church for the 6am Mass by himself. He’s capable of caring for himself and is now preparing to enter preschool.

Angel Kong Kong – Tian Kong Kong: 19. Cerebral palsy. Needs wheelchair. Unable to care for himself. Learning to use computer with his feet.

Angel Chong Ai – Tian Chong Ai: 15. Mental retardation with senilism. Unable to care for herself. She’s only 15 but sometimes looked like 50! She has that facial expression of a certain unbearable pain and suffering way beyond her real age. Her world is unknown to all of us. I tried to capture her facial expression but simply couldn’t do it with my digital camera. All I could do was to hold her hand and shoulder and walk with her slowly.  Two days prior to my departure, she was able to hold my hand tight showing her trust in me in her own way. It was difficult for me to say goodbye to her.

Angel Bobo – Tian Bobo: 10 months. Cerabral palsy, unable to care for himself. Sleeps a lot but he sure is cute when he’s awake! Sisters are helping him with some physical therapy.  Since it can be painful at times, the sisters would oftentimes cry with tears and looking sideways while performing the therapy on him.

Angel Jing Jing – Tian Jing Jing: 2. Mental retardation with spasm. Unable to care for herself. She almost never smile or laugh, but she can cry aloud for sure. One volunteer who’s an amateur photographer waited hours one time trying to capture her smile and he successfully made a beautiful shot with Jing Jing smiling. The picture even became the front cover of Liming Family’s annual magazine that year!

Angel Hua Hua – Tian Hua Hua: 18. Paralysed from waist down. Needs wheelchair. Able to card for himself. Likes to collect coins from different countries. 7th grader.

Angel Zuo Zuo – Tian Jia Zuo: 1. Down Syndrome. A super cute little boy. He has been adopted by a family in Beijing two days after my arrival. Missed by everyone, especially Sister Shi who’s in charge of children’s welfare. Hope he can adapt to the new family soon.

Angel Qing Qing – Tian Qing Qing: 21. Burnt. Qing Qing would like to try and live independently eventually. She’s studying in the town of Shijiazhuang and returns to Liming Family on weekends.

Angel Peng Peng – Tian Peng Peng: 3. Spastic Cerebral Palsy. Unable to care for himself. He’s like a tank. Just learned how to walk and he would walk all over the place and bumps himself or fall but he doesn’t complain of pain nor cry.   I’ve tried to help and teach him to eat by himself at meal times and believe I have pretty much succeeded in doing so. Just hope he can maintain what he learned after I left.

Angel Lili – Tian Lili: 19. Spastic Cerebral Palsy. Can only move one of her arms slowly. Needs wheelchair and unable to care for herself. Her head would turn to one side after awhile and start drooling. But she has that broad and contagious beautiful smile when looking at people! Even though the smile was silent but it’s truly unforgettable.

What can we do to help these Angels of Dawn? To help Liming Family?

Although all non-professionals and coming from countryside background, the sisters learned quickly and developed a variety of basic programs and services aimed at helping the children and villagers as well. It is truly with the grace of God that the below achievements were accomplished under tremendous hardships such as no government support, lack of funding and lots of trials and error learnings:

Clinics – 3 small clinics stationed by sisters to help serve the surrounding villages and communities

Rehabilitation center– established a rehab center to serve all children and young adults alike with mental-retardations and various types of cerebral palsy.

Vocational training center– to train children and especially older handicapped young adults so they may be able to learn a skill, find work and become independent

Adoption family plan – for angels to have the opportunity to enjoy a “permanent” normal family life

Foster family plan – for angels to have the opportunity to experience and enjoy normal family life on either short term or long term basis

One-to-One support Plandepending on individual’s situation, each donor is asked to provide financial support of RMB 300 (around USD50) on either monthly, annually or long term basis. For one year or longer support, donors will receive regular newsletters on the angel he/she supports. Donors can also correspond directly with his/her own angel.

Retreat Center – Many of the bishops, priests and sisters in China are overworked, stressed to the limit and do not have any good place for retreat, spiritual growth or just to rest and recharged! There isn’t any reasonably good retreat center in any of the Northern cities in China and that’s why the sisters of St Therese has undertook the heavy burden of constructing a new retreat center for all who need to use it. They’ve planned for more than 5 years and have finally raised over one million RMB. A general contractor (also a church member) has been hired and foundation work and exterior wall constructions have just begun. The sisters will have to raise another 1.5 million RMB to complete the project. It’s a huge and difficult task but the sisters are undaunted. Once completed, the center will be able to accommodate 60 people with dorms, chapel library, multi-purpose hall, spiritual counseling rooms, kitchen, dinning room, etc. The center will benefit the dioceses and various orders of several Northern provinces, priests & sisters, church groups, lay members, youth & family groups, seminarians, etc. Let us support the sisters wholeheartedly.

Support through Volunteer Service:

Liming is always on the look out for people with special knowledge, especially in the area of Special Education for the handicapped and/or mentally retarded; Psychologist who can teach the sisters as well as some young adult and even children on self awareness & self esteem. Also always in hot demand are English teachers for sisters, middle school seminarians and postulants and even some of the angels in the Liming Family.

Liming Family welcomes volunteers of all ages, college or high school students, retired lay people with special knowledge to visit them on short or long term basis for volunteer work or teach English during school breaks or anytime in between. Please feel free to contact jerry at 1-949-302-1448 This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information

Financial Support:

With almost a hundred children and young adults at Liming Family and the rehabilitation center currently, it takes roughly 1.2 million RMB annually to run the two facilities. The family now receives about RMB 150,000 from various family donors and some donations from within China. However, the majority of support comes from overseas donations and foundations and your financial support is always greatly appreciated and needed.

Donations from United States: (IRS tax deductable)

Please write check payable to: S.T.A.S.S. and mark “for Liming Family” on the Remark section of the check. Mail the check to: S.T.A.S.S. 1501 S. Atlantic Blvd. Monterey Park, CA 91754. STASS will send a tax deductable receipt to each donor directly.

Donations from outside of United States: (check with your own residing country’s tax agency regarding tax deduction issues)

For donations in foreign currency, it’s much simpler to process the wired fund to an individual’s bank account in China rather than an organization or a charity’s bank account. (Please write “for Liming family” on your T/T form). Bank of China Ningjin Branch has also agreed to waive the handling fees if funds are wired to the account of “Gong Cuihong” who is a sister in charge of Liming Family’s finance. Upon receipt of the fund, Liming Family will mail a receipt directly to each donor.

Do your children complain that they are always bored and that they have nothing worthwhile to do? If that’s the case then worry no more.   Why not send them (better yet, go with them) to any of the above mentioned places in China for winter/summer mission & volunteer work or to teach English? They will learn Chinese quickly, make lots of new friends, have a wonderful and memorable time and they will thank you for it and come back a totally changed person because it will be a “life changing” experience. They will be more mature, more loving, more caring, easier to get along , respect their parents more, love their family more, love their church more and love God more and best of all, become Angels in your family!

(IRS tax deductable):

請將支票郵寄到S.T.A.S.S. 1501 S.Atlantic Blvd.
